Summary of "Veterans Day"
November 11 was from the beginning a day to remember the sacrifices that American men and women made during World War I. On november 11, the Armistice between the Allies and Germans was signed after four years of fighting in the World War I. Twenty years after the war ended, in 1938, the Armistice Day became a legal holiday, but when later wars occured the veterans of those wars felt that Armistice Day wasn't signifcant for them. In 1954 the congress decided to rename the day and it became Veterans Day, a day to honor all the sacrifices that American men and women have done in war.
Traditional the Veterans Day celebrations include ceremonies, parades, concerts and speeches. At 11:00am many Americans use to observe a moment of silence to remember the ones who have fought in war. The prestident use to lay a wreath, honoring all of America’s soldiers who have fallen in war. Laterly the celebrations have become more personal and veterans and their families gather at war memorials and think of their comrades, friends, and relatives who died in the war.
The focus is mostly on 20th century military conficts in which U.S. soldiers have had a significat role. "By remembering veterans and all that they went through, perhaps the leaders of nations will strive to find peaceful solutions to world problems, using war only as a very last resort."
